I'm not an expert on American cars - is that a 70s Chrysler Newport?
Beautiful car, love the colour. I would love a land yacht like this, but Europe is possibly the worst place for such a car.

It is! She's actually a 1969.

My God, she's wonderful. Restored, or is this original condition?
If ever you come to Montreal, let me know - I'd be glad to let you drive me around town in that car!

Repainted in 2002 but otherwise original. I'll keep you posted haha or just meet me in Ottowa

Damn, am I going to have to wear a tuxedo just to be around it? I got a multi meter. I love when there's sales on when you need to grab something.

Hmmm, you might be able to get away with it. Width-wise, it's almost identical to my XJ40 and that does fine.
The big Chrysler's nearly 80cm longer though, and my Jag pokes out the back of most parking spaces, so it might not be so rosy...

As someone who mostly drives into the very centre of a city dominated by middle-age sized roads, a car of that length is deadly. There would be literally no where to park when I have trouble finding spaces for my ~4,50m Fiat.
Would be fun as a weekend cruiser though.

Jealous - used to drive one in the 80's — almost mint - everything except the 12mpg! this is just pure classic, and why I love cars ....

She cleans up pretty good.
Far from there and 30 years ago, for various reasons that seemed good at the time, a '71 in a similar color is one of my Ones That Got Away. Probably would've served me better and longer than all of the next three or four cars I bought instead.

Damn, that's classy

C-Body "Fuselage" cars for life!

Wow much car! Such shine! Many beauty!
When I read what you paid for it, I expected it to be a little rough around some edges, good runner but not such a looker. I'm impressed! You, Sir, robbed somebody blind in broad daylight. Now please cherish it and don't run it to the ground in it's DD duties. It would be a real shame. Oh, and did I say that I'm a little jelly?

Peg legged (assuming it doesn't have a posi or LSD in it) peggy :D

On the other hand, you would have the attention of just about everybody in the immediate area you are driving through.

Even by American standards of that era, the Fuselage Chryslers were huge, I believe that generation full-size Plymouth/Dodge/Chrysler/Imperial were actually the biggest standard wheelbase postwar cars in regular production. Even with the outsize dimensions, Chrysler still paid some attention to packaging, as the space efficiency is better than the competition. The interior is probably about the size of a Manhattan studio apartment.

No doubt. One reason why US cars are so popular among the Pimp/biker/bouncer scene.

Space is a luxury. It may sound funny, but if everything works out I'll be spending a semester in the US and all I want to get around is some big, American land yacht. Or a Crown Vic, which is decadent enough for European standards.

Doesn't sound funny at all, I drove a Cadillac Fleetwood all through college and beyond. By far the most comfortable car I've ever owned, but, then, I've never owned a big '70s Chrysler.

There also seems to be some popularity with retro "greasers" in Europe. Mostly in the northern countries, from what I've read.

That sounds awesome. Was it more or less reliable? That's my main fear concerning relatively old, american cars.

It was, until I graduated and got a job where I was driving 500+ miles per week, that's kind of when different ancillary systems started breaking.

Thanks for the info, it gives me hope that I don't have to rely on some FWD hatchback to get me around L.A.

I'm still looking for vacation plans in mid-August with the family, Ottawa is on the list. I'll keep in touch.

Sounds good!
![]() 07/01/2014 at 18:29 |

No reason to, especially in LA. Just note that big GM cars from the '80s and '90s can be pretty fragile as they get older, and that Chrysler didn't make any full-size RWD landyachts after 1981 (unless you count the 2005+ LX cars), so theirs are older still.
The best bet for reliability, though not as interesting or as obscenely big as some of the others, would be one of the Ford Panther cars - Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Town Car, Marauder (if budget allows). Crown Vics especially are dirt cheap, even just a few years old with low miles.

A Crown Vic would be wonderful. Bigger than an S-Class, V8 upfront? Count me in, that's what I understand under being American. Nothing fancy, just something that won't leave me stranded and that would allow me to visit the area around L.A.
